This is the second article of an ongoing series that will spotlight builders at upcoming LEGO fan conventions and events.
Davin White has been building with LEGO for as long as he can remember. Even during his LEGO “Dark Ages” – usually during the teen years when other pursuits take hold, Davin still collected LEGO sets and bricks whenever he saw a good deal. This served him well when he began building again as an AFOL (Adult Fan Of LEGO) focusing on themes including Space, Technic/Robotics, Micropolis, City, and more. According to Davin, “I have so many ideas that span across genres; I really don’t just focus on one. It’s all fun to build!”
Participating in his local BayLUG, Davin has made some outstanding friendships with club members. There is a lot of opportunity to meet other AFOLs and share the joy of LEGO at monthly meetings and BayLUG exhibits throughout the year. Davin and his local LUG create displays for the local Maker Faire, The Great Train Show, San Jose Christmas in the Park, and their own annual Holiday Show at the Museum of American Heritage in Palo Alto.
At the annual LEGO convention, Bricks By The Bay, held each summer in Santa Clara, Davin exhibits and photographs the event. Last year Davin designed the Event Kit for Bricks By The Bay. Taking the convention theme, Animation, to heart, Davin created a Zoetrope, a pre-film era technology for displaying animated sequential artwork. Convention attendees were treated to a swirling LEGO device capable of displaying animation created with three different techniques: flat two dimensional mosaic artwork, 3-D mini fig or mini build creations, or two dimensional drawings or photography sandwiched between a window brick. Capturing the essence of the theme and using LEGO in such a unique way, the kit was a hit at the 2018 Bricks By The Bay!
Bricks by the Bay is a LEGO fan event in Santa Clara, California that takes place July 11-14, 2019. For more information about attending the convention or seeing the displays, you can go to the Bricks by the Bay webpage!
