LEGO® Winds Back the Clock to the Eclectic 1970s & 80s to Welcome A New Family of Porsche 911 Owners!
BILLUND, JANUARY 28th 2021: The LEGO® Group has wound the clock back to the era of big hair, new wave and punk rock for the launch of the latest LEGO car set, the two-in-one LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa bridges the gap across two decades to unite this pair of iconic sports cars.
To celebrate the latest LEGO version of the ubiquitous rear-engined German sports car, LEGO has collaborated with Porsche to recreate a selection of the most vivid adverts from the model’s history, this time starring the smaller but equally desirable LEGO namesake.
The LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa have been faithfully recreated in LEGO brick form as a two-in-one model, allowing the builder to build a coupe or convertible from the same set. Both are rich in detail, with from their rear-mounted engines to their classic silhouettes and sculpted sports seats in eye-catching orange-nougat.
Four Porsche adverts from throughout the 911’s history have been selected to be made into LEGO art prints, as part of a limited-edition LEGO Porsche owners pack. Along with the collectible art prints, the pack also contains a certificate of ownership and a card wallet in a smart collector’s portfolio. The LEGO Porsche owners pack will be available in limited numbers for customers who order the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa set through LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program.
LEGO is also offering brick and Porsche fans alike the chance to hear the stories behind the design of the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa with an online car meet to be hosted via LEGO.com on 16th February exclusively for members of LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program. The session will be led by LEGO design master Mike Psiaki, along with Exterior Designer at Porsche, Fabian Schmölz and Jörg Thilow of Porsche Heritage and Museum.
The talk will delve into the rich heritage of the original Porsche 911 and its beautiful, elegant yet sporty design that has been adapted over the years but never changed. As a result, every generation is instantly recognisable as a Porsche 911.
As is befitting of a major car launch, LEGO has also taken a trip to a fantasy LEGO Car Factory, with a 1980s-inspired animation of the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa rolling along the production line, inspired by a bygone era of car production and extravagant launches.
Mike Psiaki, Design Master at the LEGO Group commented: “Taking ownership of a brand-new sports car is an experience to savour and this is a feeling we wanted to recreate for LEGO fans. Few nameplates provoke as much emotion as that of the Porsche 911, and it has been a fascinating journey stepping back in time to one of the most evocative decades for car design and society.”
Jörg Thilow, product development at Porsche Heritage & Museum added: “Working closely together has enabled us to create detailed brick models with accuracy that is second-to-none. This is the kind of model where you’ll always find a new detail or refinement that is true to the original, including building blocks specifically designed for our 911.
“These latest LEGO incarnations of our sportscar icon, along with the LEGO artworks inspired by the past, capture not only the unmistakeable design of the cars that inspired them, but also the changing times.”
Members of LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program will be able to purchase the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa set from February 16th on LEGO.com. From March 1st, the set will be on sale in LEGO Retail stores and across LEGO.com.
